A recent study of New Jersey nursing homes found more than 2,000 problems at 364 nursing homes in the state, a small decline from the previous year. The state does have health and fire-related incidents reported at levels significantly below the national average.
The Best Nursing Home in New Jersey
At least with respect to the number of complaints registered, Emerson Health Care Center in Bergen County receives top honors. The family-owned facility has had no complaints filed against it for the last three years. An Emerson spokesperson said that it has an extremely low turnover rate in its staff, as well as experienced and dedicated administrators who regularly conduct care audits. Jonathan Mechaly said that the nurses know all the patients, and are committed to monitoring them on a regular basis and attending to their needs.
The Worst Nursing Home in New Jersey
With 57 deficiencies over the last three years, Atrium Post Acute Care of Lawrenceville had the worst record in the study. Officials there note that Atrium only recently took the facility over from its prior owner. The new owners say they have implemented a number of new policies and are participating in a Department of Health and Senior Services survey that they believe will lead to a dramatic reduction in deficiencies.
State officials conduct a visit to every licensed nursing home in the state at least once a year, looking at a variety of concerns, from staffing and housekeeping to safety and quality of care.
