Is Your Child’s Safety Seat Safe?
According to information posted by safercar.gov, a website of the United States Department of Transportation, over the last ten years dozens of child safety seats have been recalled. Though manufacturers of child safety seats typically put an “expiration” date on the product, for practical purposes many child restraint seats are used long after the stated date. How can you know if your child’s seat is safe? There are a number of websites, including safercar.gov, that provide a list of all seats which have been subject to recall. Here are some of the more well-known child safety seats that have been recalled.
The Graco Car Seats
Consumer advocates have long argued that certain Graco seats should be recalled, citing numerous instances where the seat buckle became stuck and the child could not be removed. Graco has been a defendant in numerous lawsuits, including wrongful death claims and a class action lawsuit, alleging injury resulting from the buckle defect. Graco initially recalled 12 different models of child restraint seats, but recently added seven more seats, based on a request from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA).
The Britax Seats
A number of child safety seats manufactured by Britax have been recalled, for various reasons, including:
- Choking hazards from soft plastic on the seat
- Unwanted detachment of a harness adjuster
- Laceration risk from sharp edges on the chest clip
- Failure of a tether upon impact
The Evenflo Seats
A number of child safety seats manufactured by Evenflo have been recalled. Among the concerns that led to these recalls were:
- Buckles that don’t easily release
- Cracks that develop at critical points in the seat
- Separation of the seat from the base of the product
